In-person training
Learn it out there, with an instructor beside you.

What I run
Pick a day. I’ll sort the rest.
Everything below runs one-to-one or for groups, pitched at your level, not a script. No prices listed because no two days are the same. Tell me what you’re after and I’ll quote it properly.

The main event
Navigation training
The thing I teach most and know best. A day on the hill working on map reading, compass skills and route finding, built around where you are now, from reading your first contour line to full mountain navigation in bad visibility.
- One-to-one or small group days
- Beginner map reading through to mountain skills
- The perfect follow-on if you’ve done my online courses
Indoors and out
Climbing courses
From your first ever session to feeling at home on real rock. Indoor courses cover belaying, knots and rope work, so the climbing wall stops feeling like a members-only club. Outside, we work on the skills that keep you safe and climbing well.
- Introduction to indoor climbing and belaying
- Rope work and safety skills
- Outdoor climbing days on real rock

Between walking and climbing
Scrambling & gorge walking
The fun bit where walking turns into something more. Classic ridge lines and Grade 1 scrambles with the skills to do them safely, or a gorge day if you’d rather get wet. Brilliant for walkers who want more out of a mountain day.
- Classic ridge and scrambling days
- The rope skills and judgement to scramble safely
- Gorge walking sessions for groups and families
Schools, units and centres
DofE training & assessment
I’ve been a DofE Expedition Assessor since 2011. I deliver expedition training for Bronze, Silver and Gold groups, and assess qualifying expeditions. If you need an assessor, or a trainer who genuinely enjoys teaching teenagers to navigate in the rain, that’s me.
- Expedition training at all three levels
- Qualifying expedition assessment
- Working with schools, groups and providers

Guided goals
Challenge events & charity walks
Got a goal? The National Three Peaks, a charity walk, a first proper mountain, or a route you’ve promised yourself for years. I plan it, guide it and get your group round safely. Tell me the objective and I’ll tell you what it takes.
- Three Peaks and other classic challenges
- Charity and corporate walking events
- Personal goals, planned and guided properly
Also on offer
More ways to get outside.
Mountain biking
Skills coaching from the basics up: body position, braking, cornering and control on real trails. MIAS Level 2 qualified.
Paddlesports
Kayak, canoe and SUP coaching from first strokes to moving water, with white water safety and rescue covered properly. British Canoeing qualified.
Coasteering
Sea-level scrambling, swimming and jumps at venues we know well. One of the best days out there is, and a brilliant group activity.
Who you’ll get
One contact. The right instructor.
Most days, you’ll get me. I run everything from one-to-one sessions to big multi-group events, and when the numbers go past what one instructor can safely take, I bring in instructors I’ve worked alongside for years and trust completely, each qualified for exactly what they’re delivering. Either way, you deal with me from first message to the day itself, and the standard doesn’t change.
Where I work
North Wales to the South West, and most places between.
North Wales
One half of home. Eryri is some of the best training ground in Britain, and where most mountain days run.
The South West
The other half of home. Coast, moor and crag, with regular days for groups and individuals.
The Lake District
A regular patch. Navigation days, scrambles and challenge walks throughout the year.
The South East
Training days, DofE work and walks for schools and groups across the south east.
Scotland, or somewhere else in mind? Ask. If I can’t get there myself, I usually know someone good who can.
